JUSTIN Burkina Faso is turning its natural wealth into something bigger than extraction, it is building the capacity to process its own gold at home. 🇧🇫🔥
The country has officially inaugurate£d its first national gold refinery, RAFFIN0R-BF, marking a major shift toward keeping more of the value from Burkina Faso’s mineral resources within the country. The facility is designed to refine gold locally and in its first phase, has an annual refìning capacity of about 164 tonnes.
For years, many African countries have exported valuable raw materials only to buy back finished products at a much higher price. Burkina Faso is now pushing a different approach, Extract it, refine it, build the skills around it and retain more of the value at home.
President Ibrahim Traore says the ambition is to move beyond simply exporting raw materials and develop more of the mineral value chain inside Burkina Faso. The refinery represents an investment of more than 11 billion CFA France.
This is more than a gold bar. It represents industrial ambition, local processing, job creation, technical knowledge and a country seeking greater control Over how its natural resources contribute to its economy.
Africa is rich in resources. The bigger question is how much of that wealth can be transformed into lasting value for Africans themselves.
What are your thoughts on Burkina Faso’s move?
