Why Ethnicity Shouldn’t Be More Important Than Light – A Businesswoman Calls Out Tribal Politics

To my Yoruba brothers and sisters who have said you will not vote for Peter Obi in the next presidential election simply because he is Igbo –

Your reason is that Igbos are already dominating Lagos and other parts of the country, and if an Igbo man becomes president, they will take over Nigeria completely.

Please, if nothing else, do not vote to keep this present government in power.

For over a month and a half now, we have not had steady light. And we are supposed to be on Band A. What is the point of this Band A in the first place? Why should electricity be divided into bands at all?

When we complain about the blackout, some of you will say “go and buy solar.” As if solar inverter is ₦30k. Nigerians are too classist.

We are in a poor country and we are still doing class discrimination. If you travel out, you will see how other countries run. Some countries that are currently in active war have more stable power supply than we do.

We are not even demanding too much from this government. We are only asking for the least they can do – basic things like electricity.

Fueling generator is killing me. I spend more than ₦100k every day on fuel for my shop and my car. What we are asking for is just the minimum.

Nigeria can generate up to 13,000 megawatts of electricity, but what Nigerians actually get is only around 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts. This is because successive governments have refused to fix and upgrade the transmission infrastructure.

Yet they will sell power to other countries. If you don’t know, Nigeria supplies electricity to Ghana while we sit here in darkness.

The money they are using to buy 2026 Toyota Prado for youth leaders – that money could be used to upgrade our transmission network so Nigerians can at least enjoy basic amenities.

At the end of the day, the question is this: why are we allowing tribe to be more important than good governance and the basic things we need to survive?
