₦10,000 / 7.69kg = ~₦1,300 per kg. And that IS the market right now.
As of August-October 2026, accredited outlets in Lagos were selling at about ₦1,300/kg, while smaller plants charged ₦1,350 to ₦1,400. In South-West cities like Lagos and Ibadan, major plants are retailing between ₦1,350 and ₦1,450 per kg. NMDPRA data for July 2026 put Lagos average at ₦1,325/kg, which was actually the cheapest of the 6 cities they tracked.
So his statement “put camera for my face” is accurate for present-day Lagos. Late 2025 was even worse – prices spiked to ₦2,000 – ₦2,500 per kg in many parts of Lagos metropolis.
About his comparison to Goodluck Jonathan’s time:
He said he bought a cylinder for ₦6,200 then and filling 12kg was ₦2,200. That tracks with history. Towards the end of the Jonathan administration, 12.5kg was generally around ₦3,300–₦3,500, about ₦264–₦280 per kilogramme. Earlier in that administration (2010-2013) it was even cheaper, so ₦2,200 for 12kg (~₦183/kg) is plausible for when he bought it.
Why the huge jump from ~₦280/kg to ~₦1,300/kg?
It’s not just one government. Three things stacked:
1. FX and import cost: Nigeria still imports part of its LPG. When naira moved from ~₦150/$ in 2014 to over ₦1,500/$ now, the cost of importing and transporting jumps. 2. Subsidy removal & deregulation: Both petrol and gas are now fully market-priced. 3. Supply chain: Marketers themselves blame global tensions, depot prices shooting to ₦17.5m – ₦19m per 20 metric tonnes, and logistics from coastal depots like NavGas/Techno Oil to your street retailer.
So when he says “if you fill 12kg now na ritual you dey do” – 12kg today is ₦15,600 to ₦16,800 at those rates, vs ₦2,200 then. That’s a 7x increase. No be small thing.
The EFCC joke is frustration talking, but it shows how energy cost has moved from “social item” to luxury for many families. A lot of households in your area don switch to small-small refill (that 7.69kg you saw) or mix gas with charcoal/induction just to manage.
If you dey refill for Lagos, two things dey help people small:
• Buy from major accredited plants, not roadside – they hold ₦1,300 line more. • Refill early morning mid-week, prices dey fluctuate by delivery day.
You buy gas recently for that price too?
