Close Call: How I Nearly Got Dragged Into My Neighbor’s Crime

I had a terrifyingly close shave with the law yesterday, all because I agreed to give my next-door neighbor a ride to a local snooker joint.

On our way back, a police vehicle suddenly cut us off and signaled for me to pull over. My initial thought was that it was just a routine check—asking for vehicle papers and the usual roadside questioning.

However, as soon as the officers stepped up to the car, they barked out a question: “Which one of you is Sammy?”

My neighbor identified himself. Without a word to me, the officers immediately grabbed him, packed him into their van, and sped off into the night. They completely ignored me.

Confused and shaken, I drove straight back to our house, only to find a crowd of neighbors gathered in the compound. It turned out the police had already raided our place looking for him earlier.

The story quickly unfolded: Sammy had been involved with an older woman who recently discovered that her ATM card was missing. Over half a million Naira ($500k+) had been withdrawn from her account without her consent, and she traced the theft directly to him.

That was when everything clicked for me. Over the last five days, Sammy had been strangely generous—throwing money around, buying me meals, and paying for my fuel just to have me drive him around town.

I was entirely in the dark about where that cash was coming from. My only prayer now is that he doesn’t try to drag my name into his mess to lighten his own burden, because I had absolutely no idea what he was up to.
