A Nigerian lady has got people talking online after she revealed how a loan she took two years ago has now tripled.
The lady, who goes by the handle @Onemodupe on X, disclosed that she borrowed ₦1 million from a loan app to sort out a medical emergency but could not pay back on time.
According to her, the debt has now ballooned to over ₦3.5 million due to accumulated interest.
What shocked many people the most was her follow-up claim that she actually has enough money in her OPay account to clear the debt, but she has decided not to pay.
Reactions Trail Her Post
Her post quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians.
Some users pleaded with her to at least return the original amount she borrowed, while others advised her to reach out to the loan company to negotiate the huge interest.
One user, Dayo, jokingly wrote, asking her to send him a small part of the money in her account.
Another user, Angel B, urged her to start by repaying the ₦1 million principal if she can’t pay everything at once.
Kiel told her to pay the initial capital and claimed the extra charges might be waived.
Colee warned that refusing to repay could ruin her credit score and block her from getting loans from other apps in the future.
Okunoye David suggested a more peaceful approach – to negotiate with the lender for a discount or waiver on the interest, then pay back the principal.
The story has once again sparked debate about the dangers of loan apps, high interest rates, and what happens when borrowers fail to repay.
